Today I went to my uncle’s shop to have a look at what my mother’s job is about and to learn about the business, since she is working there and the boss (my uncle) is out of town. I was initially having the idea to build an online presence for the business since the business is really traditional, without any information online.
I was also pondering on the idea to help build an electronic POS system since currently the receipts and transactions are done manually handwritten, which is really tedious and prone to errors. I am not sure how this idea would sit with my uncle since it is his business and he may end up selling it down the road so he may feel like I am trying to poach or takeover his business.
Then I had the idea to apply some analytics to my idea. In a nutshell, I will try to build an online presence and e-commerce platform with the popular products in the store. Since the business is really general trading of hardware and sanitary fittings, the shop can carry general hardware in addition to the plumbing hardware that is their core business. I can apply some analytics to find out which are the more popular products and then put them on e-commerce on an consignment basis so that after I receive an order I will arrange the logistics.
In this case, it could sound more like a win-win proposal and a business deal instead of a taking over. I have no idea how it would turn out but it sounds like an interesting project to work on for sure.
